What Changed on 1 July?

For years, if your accepted DVA conditions sat under the older VEA (Veterans' Entitlements Act), you were locked out of Household Services compensation. The door was shut.

From 1 July 2026, that door is open. Veterans with service-related conditions accepted under the VEA can now apply for Household Services — assessed under the improved MRCA (Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act). The same change applies to Attendant Care, if your needs are more personal.

DVA won't write to tell you this. Most veterans who now qualify have no idea the change happened. That's why we're telling you.

⚠️ Already Getting Household Services?

There's something here for you too. From 1 July, you can ask DVA to reassess your needs — so any conditions accepted under the VEA count for the first time. If your current support isn't keeping up with what you're dealing with, a reassessment could make a real difference.

What Household Services Can Cover

If approved, DVA can fund the everyday jobs around the home you're struggling with because of an accepted service-related condition.

🧹
Domestic Cleaning

Vacuuming, mopping, bathroom and kitchen cleaning.

👕
Laundry & Ironing

Washing, drying, ironing and putting away.

🌿
Gardening & Lawn-Mowing

Keeping the yard safe, tidy and manageable.

🪟
Windows & Gutters

Cleaning and clearing that keeps your home safe.

The idea is simple: keep your home safe, clean and manageable — so you can put your energy where it matters.

Who Is This For?

This is not a "free cleaning for every veteran" deal — and anyone telling you that is having a lend of you. DVA assesses each claim individually. Broadly, to be eligible you need:

  • 1
At least one condition accepted by DVA as service-related.
This is the starting point. Without an accepted condition, there's no entitlement to assess.
  • 2
Genuine difficulty managing household tasks you used to handle.
The difficulty needs to be linked to your accepted condition — not just age or general health.
  • 3
No one in your household can reasonably do it unpaid.
DVA looks at whether a partner, family member, or carer in your home could assist first. This is the most common reason claims get knocked back.

Don't have a DVA card yet? If you've served full-time in the ADF and have a service-related condition, you may still be eligible — you'd need to lodge a claim to have it accepted first. We can point you in the right direction.

The only way to know for certain is to have your situation assessed. That's exactly what our team helps with — at no charge.

Don't Mix These Two Up

This is the most common trip-up — and it's not your fault, because DVA doesn't make it clear. There are two separate programs for help at home. They work differently and they don't stack on the same tasks.

✅ What Changed
Household Services
(Compensation)

Claim-based. Assessed on your individual circumstances. Available to veterans with service-related conditions accepted under VEA or MRCA. This is what changed on 1 July.

⚠️ Didn't Change
Veterans' Home Care
(VHC)

Separate program for Gold and White Card holders. Has its own eligibility and assessment process. VHC hasn't changed. Which one suits your situation depends on your card type and circumstances.

Working out which one applies to you — or whether both do — is exactly the kind of thing we help veterans sort out. One call and you'll know where you stand.

🤝 Know a Mate Who Should See This?

A lot of veterans have no idea this entitlement exists — let alone that the rules just changed. If you know someone who might be missing out, do them a favour and pass this on. You might be the one who makes the difference.
